santa claus is coming to town. thanks to norad and google earth, we have a camera on his sleigh right now tracking him around the globe. santa just stopped by greenland and is over canada right now. we've been watching him all night flying over china, argentina. he's a busy night tonight. you can see him right there. tom skilling, are you seeing him on your radar? >> we've been watching him. half the country is covered by snow so he's got plenty of room to land tonight. boy, do we have snow in this area. what's coming this weekend in lake effect snow belts will be interesting. that may represent the heaviest bursts of snow though not everybody will see those. but snow is transitions from the broad-based system snow to lake snow that comes in bursts. that will start tomorrow into sunday and sunday night. 2-4-inches expected tonight. we'll show you what numbers
have come down. heavy lake snow. local 6 plus inch totals near the lake. not everybody will see that. in fact, the western suburbs will see the sun out and flurries. it's been snowing broadly during the day where visibilities are lowest. like in kankakee it's snowing the heaviest. it's coming down fairly steadily in our area. you'll see our models continue to advertise eastern lake, cook county, will county, parts of northwest indiana. lake county there could see some snow. here's how much comes down the rest of tonight from this point forward. here's the amount that may be down through tomorrow evening. and the whole weekend could see more snow amounts. note the system snow. it shifts east. then you'll see this long plume right here. it's only about 35 miles wide. but if you get under this, it really comes down. and look at the way it lines up.
250 miles of it into cook county. weather advisories to the south and east of us. and a bomb of a storm may be going to develop on the east coast for holiday travelers heading back late in the weekend. this will track across florida, explode over the mid-atlantic. look at the winds with this system. which will wind its way northward. this turns the wind down the lake in our area too. much to talk about on the weather. and we'll be back to do that in a bit. we'll have the full holiday forecast. actually, erin mendes south there with -- can you believe this? shoppers on christmas eve. >> reporter: the snow is not slowing them down at all. they're coming in by the dozens. it is the christmas eve hustle. we've been chasing these people scrambling to get their last minute items. this toy toys r us is one of the last things open. it is a haven for last minute
procrastinators. there's a sense of camaraderie and glory for those making the frantic final push down the aisles. >> when it's crazy is the best time. >> reporter: hauling their gifts like a trophy. >> i guess today is man day based on what i've been told. a lot of men out shopping today. i got the prize. she'll be very happy. >> reporter: waiting has its price. >> merry christmas. >> reporter: but they slip out in the nick of time. >> this is normal for me. i finish on the day before. >> reporter: this doorman has watched this christmas eve dance for three years in a row. >> people in good moods? >> they're pretty good. everybody's pretty good this year. >> reporter: roads were dicey and slow with snow falling throughout the evening. >> 4615. come in 4615. >> reporter: workers man the
damage to the cameras dotted the chicago main roadways. 174 trucks weave through the holiday rush throwing salt and scraping slush. >> it's hour to hour here. it could change in a minute. >> reporter: travel was up almost 3% this year. those behind the wheel were feeling it with backups. not everyone's eyes were on the road. believers were looking to the sky. >> we were walking to the store and i heard bells. >> did you see anything? >> no. >> but you're pretty certain? >> i heard some bells. >> reporter: there you have it. she heard the bells. and the closing bell for shoppers is under an hour now. we had a couple going in and i said you have about 57 minutes left here. they are closing the doors here by 10:00 here at toys r us and kmart. one employee here said the most challenging part of working christmas eve is getting them out.
it's kind of like last call. they say they're begging for just a couple minutes more even in the final hour. >> true last minute shoppers can do it in about 15 minutes, i think. that's all it takes. >> reporter: speaking from experience? >> a lot of experience, unfortunately. thank you so much for that tonight. this christmas, we're thinking of the chicago firefighters. dozens of them lining up at the homes of the two firefighters who died in a building collapse this week. coming up, the tremendous show of support for their families and we'll tell you what caused the fire that started it all. >> it is christmas tomorrow. it's kind of hard. >> reporter: hard is an understatement especially for the families left behind. stringer the father of two adult children, ankum the father of three small kids. >> i just think about like with corey with the baby and the kids. i'm sure kids always say what they want for christmas. we got two families that all they want is for their father to come home. and they won't be coming home this christmas. >> heavenly father in the name of jesus we ask you to touch our heart and give us strength. >> reporter: prayers help these men cope with their heavy hearts. wednesday's blaze was started by someone who lit wood or rubbish on fire in the abandoned building on east 75th street. traps -- perhaps a homeless person trying to keep warm. >> it's hard for us. the loss we took is immeasurable. it was tough.
>> reporter: one by one each person filed into the homes of both corey ankum and edward stringer. two great firefighters and leaders who will never be forgotten. >> my brother was a big part of this family. he was the glue to it. now i got to be the glue for it now. you know? and he's going to be truly missed. >> reporter: on the south side, jae miller, wgn news. >> and funeral arrangements are set for veteran firefighter edward stringer. visitation is monday in oak lawn from 3 -- 3:00-9:00. here's some preliminary information for corey ankum. the wake will be wednesday at leak and sons funeral home. in chicago the burial is thursday. for the ankum family, a memorial fund has been set up at chase bank. donations will be accepted at

through dewitt, iowa. beautiful shots from andrea. we got the frost yesterday in illinois. as well did eddy. beautiful shots yesterday. we had dense fog out yesterday coated everything with ice. we had cool water droplets that clung to cold surfaces. cloudy, it started snowing on us today. and it's been snowing across the area. 7 inches in bloomington. close to a foot in parts of iowa. we've had less than that in the city. but you see how the shoreline as we look north out after the hancock building, kind of disappears. 46% of the country is covered with snow tonight. santa will have no problem landing in any of these areas. where you see purple and white within the purple the snows are heaviest. the entire state of illinois has snow cover down. and we have a storm across
florida that will explode off the east coast, a bomb out there. as its does, the winds come down the lake into our area. something that distant has an effect on our weather. now, these will effect very select areas. parts of cook county, lake county in illinois, perhaps lake county and porter county in indiana. baa narrow corridor in the lakeside areas. where there'll be sun in between the periods of snow. tonight's snow, this so-called system snow will total 2-4 most areas. looks like it's coming about 1- 2 in our northern sections. but heavier lake snows could total more in harder hit spots around the lakeside counties this weekend. here's the situation tonight. still snowing and visibilities still reduced by the snow. we're not done accumulating the
snow yet. but as the broad system snow moves on, you'll see the lake plume develop here. these are always fascinating. you can get intense near- whiteout conditions for brief periods. and they kind of oscillate, these little waves come down this plume and they hit an area and you get heavy snow. at the same time, your neighbors 10-20 miles to the west don't know it's going on because it's not snowing where they are. but here's where the system snow will be. there's the lake enhanced snow. from kenosha county to parts of eastern lake county and northwest indiana. how much may come down? this is the snow yet to come down tonight. so we'll wind up 2-4 out of this today. we've added a bit of that today. not much out west. only flurries in the suburbs. but by late sunday night we could have upwards of 5 inches and in some spots more than
that. the storm will proceed eastward where it will meet an existing storm. the newer models are putting the storm closer to the coast and threatening places like philadelphia and new york and so forth with a very windy snowstorm perhaps late in the weekend. it's 28 at o'hare, 30 at midway airport, 27 mchenry. there's kankakee's camera today. watch the snow accumulating in buffalo grove. we also have snow in st. louis. santa is running into snow all across the state of illinois. here's our storm. this is a wind plot. watch how this thing explodes, how these winds just take over in the western atlantic into the east coast. this will roar up the coast. as it does it will deposit heavy snows. watch what happens here. we'll lay in the county map here so you'll know how
localized this snow will be. we're up to 1:00 tomorrow. we've had some snow in this band. then it runs through cook county, dupage county, northwest sections of indiana in lake county. but it never gets as far west as the fox valley. so you folks out there are going to sit and look off to the east, see the clouds banked up there. you're going to realize that we will from time to time be under some heavy snows in the metro area. the immediate city area here. snow becomes more occasional later tonight. a little bit lighter but we're still going to pick up another inch or two. low temperatures in the 20s. temperatures very moderate. chemicals work well in this situation on the roads so no driving problems. mixed sun and flurries inland. but bursts of lake snow on the lakeside counties. that will continue tomorrow when it gets to 13 on the suburbs.
and 22 up against the lake. then periods of accumulating lake snow again on sunday when temperatures will be up around 28. that could go into sunday night. then we'll shift it into indiana, the snow, and turn partly sunny at least here in chicago. 26 and mostly sunny tuesday. and a wet, windy, rainy storm could begin thursday and friday which would be new year's eve. and then the cold air hitting like a wall on new year's weekend. but we could have it mild around here. >> i like your new graphics. that's your christmas present. >> absolutely. santa was nice to the weather office. merry christmas to you. coming up: the folks still trying to make it home for the holiday, a photographer's take on the scramble hours before christmas.
